Saracens Head - A pub in Bath

Bath Pubs

There are around 120 pubs in Bath, with many more nestling in the surrounding countryside. The pubs range from the really tiny to large drinking barns, with a corresponding range of character. The locals are generally friendly. Friday and Saturday nights can be lively. Some of the pubs in Bath are quite exceptional, such as the coffin-shaped Star with its interesting period interior, and are well worth a visit just to see the building. Other pubs have a name for food, such as Hudson's Bar and Grill and the King William.

The pubs just outside Bath are particularly good, such as the Rose and Crown at Hinton Charterhouse, and the Quarryman's Arms at Box. Other popular rural pubs include the Crown at Kelston, The Fox and Badger at Wellow, and the Flemish Weaver in Corsham (fab food).

One of the best online guides is the Bath Pubs website. The definitive reference book is Bath Pubs by Kirsten Elliott and Andrew Swift.

 Some recommendations

Bar Ha Ha - Beehive Yard, off Walcot Street

Part of a pub chain housed in an imaginative conversion of Bath's old tram shed. Expensive drinks (which keeps out the riff-raff) and good food. Outside seating area good for people watching in the summer.

The Raven - Queen Street, off Queen Square

Nice central pub. Good food, including pies from Bristol's Pie Minister (they supply Harvey Nichols, so they must be good).

The Raven, Bath

The Boater - Argyle Street

Worth seeing for its Georgian frontage. Long thin pub with large outside seating area down the stairs and out the back. Popular with Bath Rugby fans.

The Boathouse, Newbridge

The Boathouse - Newbridge Road

A modern pub, built on a stunning site on the western outskirts of Bath. Very pleasant (but often crowded) in the warmer months.
